Self-Referential Poem

(It is what it is.)

Perhaps this poem will not suit you,
Find it you may to be dull and pretentious,
I respect your right to your point of view,
But this is what it is, I make no apology.

Perhaps you will think that it goes on too long,
The prosaic ramblings of a middle-aged bore,
You may believe whatever you wish, no matter,
Since this is what it is, I make no apology.

Perhaps you are selecting certain adjectives
To characterize this poem you're reading,
So be it if your adjectives are none too flattering,
Okay, this is what it is, I make no apology.

Perhaps you would rather be skiing or sailing
Than reading what you regard as sheer drivel,
Well, it's your choice, no one is forcing you,
Right? This is what it is, I make no apology.

Perhaps you should seek professional counseling
If in your mind you are so conflicted that
You're wasting time on what you feel is worthless,
Well, this is what it is, I make no apology.

Perhaps your therapist will regress you to childhood
To help you discern whence this neurotic proclivity
To spend your time in pursuits so fruitless –
Ha ha! This is what it is, I make no apology.

Perhaps you should pause to check your watch,
To see if it's time for your medication,
Feel free to stop reading and pop a pill or two,
For this is what it is, I make no apology.

Perhaps I'll cease writing after this stanza,
Your mental health may well hinge upon it,
But you're nuts if you think I'm stopping on your account!
This is what it is, I make no apology.
